Trooper Curt Boyle said that the man was driving in the right-hand lane of I-5 just south of Highway 516 around 1 p.m. when he stopped on the freeway. Boyle said that as he stood next to the vehicle trying to take his chains off, another car drifted over, hit his car and then hit him.

According to Boyle, the man flew about 80 feet forward after he was hit. He was listed in serious condition at the Seattle hospital.

Boyle said the pedestrian accident in Washington could easily have been prevented.

“You can’t just stop in the middle of the road,” he said. “Either [the victim] should have taken the nearest exit or pulled over to the shoulder” to take off the chains.
