Following an accident Wednesday night at Branch Road and U.S. Highway 97, a report stated that a woman is in a Seattle hospital and a man is in the Yakima County jail for investigation of vehicular assault. According to a patrol accident memorandum issued late Wednesday, the Washington State Patrol said drugs or alcohol were a factor in the Washington auto accident.

The 31 year old Yakima woman was transported to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle following the 6:50 p.m. crash. The hospital reported her to be in intensive care in serious condition. The man in custody is 36 years old, and from Yakima. A passenger who was riding with the male driver was not injured.
According to the accident memo, the man was driving west on Branch Road in Toppenish when he failed to stop at the intersection of Branch and Highway 97. His car crashed into a 1991 Mazda driven by the woman, who was driving south on Highway 97.
Both vehicles were destroyed.
